Course Description

This course introduces the fundamentals of automotive electrical systems with emphasis on safety, electrical theory, circuit diagnosis, batteries, starting systems, and charging systems. Instruction includes hands-on laboratory activities designed to develop diagnostic skills aligned with industry and ASE standards. Content intentionally concludes with charging system diagnosis and repair.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Apply proper safety procedures and PPE when working with automotive electrical systems.

  2. Explain electrical theory concepts including voltage, current, resistance, and Ohm’s Law.

  3. Interpret wiring diagrams and use digital multimeters for electrical testing.

  4. Diagnose and service automotive battery systems.

  5. Diagnose and repair starting systems.

  6. Diagnose and repair charging systems.

  7. Demonstrate employability skills including teamwork, documentation, and shop safety.

Course Competencies / ASE Alignment

Instruction aligns with ASE Electrical/Electronic Systems task areas: - A: General Electrical Diagnosis - B: Battery Diagnosis and Service - C: Starting System Diagnosis and Repair - D: Charging System Diagnosis and Repair

Required Materials

  • CDX Automotive Technology: Electrical Systems, 3rd Edition (or equivalent)

Section 7: Electrical System Fundamentals, Electrical Components and Wiring Repair, Meter Usage and Circuit Diagnosis, Battery Systems, Starting Systems, and Charging Systems

  • CDX Online Learning Modules (Class and Lab)

  • Safety glasses and required PPE

  • Notebook and writing materials

  • Enrollment Verification Quiz

The Enrollment Verification Quiz (EVQ) is ACC’s way of checking that students are attending and participating in classes that include an online component. In a face-to-face (physical classroom) class, this is done by checking the student’s actual presence in the classroom. In an internet, internet synchronous, hyflex, or hybrid class, students are required to complete an Enrollment Verification Quiz. The Enrollment Verification Quiz must be completed by a certain date. It is incredibly important that you complete the EVQ by the deadline. If you do not, you will be unenrolled from the course. Contact your instructor if you have any questions about completing the Enrollment Verification Quiz. This quiz should be completed by <Census Date Aug 27th>.

Please review the following before completing the Enrollment Verification Quiz.
